An online shopping cart is a software application that runs on a site's Web server and allows customers to browse for products, make a product selection, and then go through with a purchase. They can add or remove items from any point in the website or the checkout process before final payment. A shopping cart is fully integrated site mechanism, making it accessible from any location throughout the website.

As in the real world users can select items which are placed in a virtual shopping cart. When they have completed their online shopping they can proceed to the checkout where they make a payment through online credit card facility.
