The broad definition of web services describes those services offered by web development companies which relate to the design, construction, hosting and maintenance of websites and network services.

A narrower, more technical definition of web services, also known as application services, refers to services made available from a business's web server for web users or other web-connected programs. Instead of being located on individual computers, the functionality of software applications is made accessible through the Internet.

Web services can range from such major services as storage management and customer relationship management (CRM) to the functionality that allows the automatic retrieval of a stock quote, finding the best price for a particular product on the net, saving a new meeting to a calendar, translating a passage of text to another language, or validating a credit card number.
