Web Address
WebDynamic™ Web Glossary
A web address is a unique combination of words, letters, numbers and symbols which directs people to your website. It is what allows customers to find your business on the Internet.
The technical term for a web address is a URL, or Uniform Resource Locator. Every single page of your website has a unique URL, each of which has a common root URL or domain name, which, when accessed, usually takes visitors to your site's homepage.
Thanks to the universality of web addresses, your website can be located by your visitors in a matter of seconds either by typing your URL directly into a browser, via a search engine or by clicking on a link from another site. But the first two methods will only work for your business if your web address contains relevant and memorable words to illustrate who your company is and what you do.
For example, imagine that you run a dog food business called 'Happy Snaps', and your domain name is www.happysnaps.com. Visitors who already know you will easily remember or guess your web address instead of looking you up through a search engine. But if your prospects have never heard of you and key 'dog food' into a search engine, they won't necessarily find you.
It is for this reason that web addresses are an important search engine optimisation tool. If your dog food business had obtained to the domain name, www.happysnapsdogfood.com, then you would have significantly increased your chances of topping the search engine rankings for 'dog food' key phrase searches.
