Web advertising is the paid use of the world wide web to advertise a business, its website, products or services. Since the ability for the internet to display messages is infinite, most ads are extremely cheap in comparison to more expensive TV, magazine or radio advertisements.

Online advertisements come in all forms and sizes. Ad types range from banner ads, to sidebar or pop-up ads and can be in text, static image, animation or video format. They can appear in newsletters and RSS feeds, on websites, embedded in web articles and beside search engine listings.

Web advertising is most effective when it is backed up by accurate online market and demographics research. This is because the better a business understands its online market's internet usage behaviour, the more they can target particular sites. A targeted approach is essential to web advertising because of the unlimited number of sites on the world wide web, and the variability of audience figures and profiles across the medium.
