Optimizing a website is one of the best forms of internet marketing, with its ability to substantially increase page ranks, website traffic and sales, Search Engine Optimization should be a priority for all online businesses. But the key to a successful SEO campaign is researching keywords.
Keyword research is the art and science of determining the best keywords to use to drive targeted visitors to your website. The art would be using keyword research tools to see what people are actually searching for. The science would be digging down into those words or phrases and determining what a person would type into the search engine to get to what you are offering.
Take the term 'German shepherd' for instance. That is a general term that would show a lot of results if you typed it into a search engine. 'German shepherd training' would narrow the results down a little. If you had a web site offering Training German Shepherds in the Kansas City area, then 'German shepherd training Kansas city' would be the term that would get people coming to your house.
When searching for the best keywords to use to draw people to your site that are actually seeking what you offer, a little bit of keyword research will save both of you a lot of trouble.
The first step in keyword research is to know your product inside and out. By knowing your product you can start building a relevant keyword list. Show it to friends and even your list if you have one. Ask them, "if you were searching for a product like this, what search term would you use?"
When you get your keyword list, go to one of the free or paid keyword research tools. Type in your keywords and note the number of searches, number of estimated searches and suggestions for other terms. Depending on how big your keyword list is this could take a while. Try to avoid one word or generic terms, instead try to come up with three to five word phrases. You are trying to narrow down the phrases to get targeted traffic, not just people looking for 'internet marketing.'
The next step is to take your completed list and type the terms into a search engine. Check the number of results to determine if there is a large or small amount of competition. Adjust your terms until you get the search numbers at a reasonable amount and yet not an overwhelming amount of competition.
When you get down to your best keywords, take your best one and base your business on it. Use it in your domain name. Use it as the main term on your website. Use it in your title, sales copy, etc. You also use it along with some of your other terms in your blogs, articles, and any sales material you put on the internet in order to draw targeted traffic to your website.
Once you have your best keywords, the next thing you would need to do is make sure you use the proper keyword density, placement, and other SEO tactics to make sure that when someone types your keyword phrase into the search engine, that search engine sees that your web site is relevant to that request and sends them to your site.
